Tshituka’s name must be noted by Bok selectors

Although he is still working on obtaining his South African citizenship, in-form flank Vincent Tshituka must have caught the attention of Springbok coaches, according to Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen.

Tshituka was named Man of the Match again for his performance in the Lions’ 15-9 win over Scottish side Edinburgh on Saturday. It was the third such award for the older brother in four games since returning to the starting lineup.

The Lions appear to have turned the corner after a poor start to the season and are on a four-game winning streak which also includes a home win against Irish Munster.

Tshituka has been a key contributor during that period and against Edinburgh he scored a try while delivering some key turnovers and working hard on defence.

The DRC-born player is currently working to obtain his South African citizenship to be eligible for a Springbok call-up. Lions head coach Van Rooyen told the media after the match that, nevertheless, Springbok managers must have taken note of his performance.

“He’s definitely in good shape,” Van Rooyen said after the win. “I think his work rate off the ball and on the ball, whether in defense or attack, is special right now. He is definitely one of the guys who stops the momentum and gives you momentum on the team.

“The way he plays and his character, it’s hard to miss; it’s hard not to see him and it’s hard not to talk about him. I think in Saru’s conference room, her name will definitely be written on a piece of paper somewhere.

“He’s a physical athlete and I think that sums him up pretty well,” added Van Rooyen. “His speed and his ability to beat players, his ability to stop players and get one or two offloads.

“He’s a great guy and he brings a lot of energy to the team. He’s just a nice, laid-back character. He’s special to us and I think you can see from his performances that he benefits of life.

The Lions then travel to Durban to take on the Sharks at Kings Park on Saturday afternoon.
