The Jumbo-Visma team has confirmed that Supersapiens, the energy management system for athletes, will continue to be the official supplier of its men’s and women’s professional cycling teams.
Since its launch in 2020, Supersapiens, powered by Abbott’s Sport Libre Sense Glucose biosensor, has been working with the Jumbo-Visma team. The US-based company provides insights into glucose data to help athletes make informed nutritional decisions regarding training and recovery.
The ‘Supersapiens’ science team has worked closely with the performance staff and riders of the Jumbo-Visma team to develop a series of innovations. The main strategy has been to focus on specific areas of intervention for meaningful and achievable goals. The key approach is to focus on a narrow and simple objective to better understand the context and any potentially actionable information.
“One of the main scientific areas was the relationship between pre-race meals and glucose levels during exercise. This was done individually to better understand the subjective response to amount and timing of pre-exercise carbohydrate intake versus glucose response.
“Another interesting area of understanding was the relationship between training load and overnight glucose control to target specific nutritional interventions to improve glucose levels during sleep based on the training program.”
“We use Supersapiens to confirm that our nutritional strategies are achieving what we think they should be achieving,” said Asker Jeukendrup, Nutrition Manager at Team Jumbo-Visma. “It also allows us to turn general recommendations into more personalized advice. It’s the difference between hoping to improve metabolism with nutrition and measuring it.
Supersapiens CEO and Founder Phil Southerland said, “Our strategic partnership with leading teams like the Jumbo-Visma team allows us to work with the best athletes, performance teams and scientists in the world.
“The close relationship between Team Jumbo-Visma and Supersapiens first enabled us to validate the impact of CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) as a tool necessary for performance, then to innovate and offer new functionalities, such as the Coaches Dashboard that further enhances the ability to personalize nutrition for performance.
“Supersapiens is dedicated to R&D and we invest significant resources to improve the quality and performance of our products. We are delighted to continue working with the Jumbo-Visma team as together we strive to win races.
Supersapiens was launched to the public in September 2020 and the Supersapiens system, including Abbott’s Sport Libre Sense Glucose biosensor, allows athletes to automatically receive their glucose levels every minute on the Supersapiens app via Bluetooth. This data can be viewed on the Supersapiens app or on the company’s wearable device, the Supersapiens Energy Band, which is able to read glucose data directly from the Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor.
The Supersapiens system, powered by Abbott’s Sport Libre Sense Glucose biosensor, is currently available in Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the UK.
