The government has confirmed a proposal to give specific names to all AIIMS, including that of Delhi, based on regional heroes, freedom fighters, historical events or monuments in the region or their distinct geographical identity.
Majority of 23 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) submitted a list of names, after the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare asked them for suggestions on the matter, sources said officials at PTI.
AIIMS, many of which are operational while others are set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), are known by their generic name and distinguished only by their location, an official explained.
“So, the Union Health Department has drafted a proposal to give specific names to the 23 AIIMS, which includes those that are fully functional, partially operational or under construction,” the source said.
In this regard, suggestions were sought for assigning specific names to different AIIMS, which could be linked to prominent local or regional heroes, freedom fighters, geographical identity distinct from the area where the institute and important historical events or monuments in the region. “, explained the source.

It is learned that the majority of these leading health institutes have suggested three to four names with a explanatory note of the proposed names.
Six new AIIMS – Bihar (Patna), Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Odisha (Bhubaneswar), Rajasthan (Jodhpur) and Uttarakhand (Rishikesh) have been approved in PMSSY Phase 1 and are fully functional.
Of the 16 AIIMS set up between 2015 and 2022, MBBS courses and outpatient services were launched in 10 institutes, while only MBBS courses were launched in two others. The other four institutes are at different stages of development.
