The Cumberland family has decades of community service under their belt

CUMBERLAND, Wis. (WEAU) – A Cumberland family has served their community for generations.

For 38 years, the Skinner family of Cumberland served their community as mayors.

Bert Skinner is the last and current mayor with six years under his belt.

“Well, it’s been thirteen years in total now that I’ve been either a councilman or a mayor, and I’ve also served on the Barron County board,” Bert said. “So it was an interesting experience, it was exciting, there were ups and there were downs.”

Bert’s older brother, Bob Skinner, also served as mayor for four years.

“I saw my dad’s struggles over the years and I thought I would never put myself in that position,” Bob said.

Bob has also served on various committees over the years.

“I’ve been on other committees like the planning commission, the utility commission for a number of years,” Bob said.

Eventually, Bert and Bob followed in the footsteps of their father, Albert Skinner Sr.

“It goes back a long way, customer service for our community, and it’s something that I’ve really respected all these years,” Bert said.

Growing up, Bert says his father emphasized the importance of community.

“I know one thing he always told us growing up with my brothers, my two brothers, is that it’s important to give back to your community more than you take out of it,” Bert said.

Bert and Bob have other family members who have contributed to their communities, whether in Cumberland or elsewhere.

“I really think it’s important that we give back and I think that’s been a big part of living,” Bert said.

They have even seen people outside their own family do the same.

“I hope that today, as a former teacher, some of my students will have the opportunity to come back and give back to the community that I see,” said Bert.

“I’ve seen a lot of people who have gone back to the community and got involved in the community and that for me is a very positive thing,” Bob said.

As their Skinner Sr. said, giving more than you can take is important.

Bert says his term as mayor will end in April when his term ends. He says he looks forward to spending time with his seven grandchildren and his wife Sue.
