Survey shows most Japanese don’t know about health support pharmacies

Of the 10,000 respondents, only 2.6% knew what health service providers were, while only 9.2% said they had heard of them.

Despite low awareness of HSPs, 44% of respondents wanted to use HSPs in the future, after the services had been explained to them.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition in Tokyo, Japan, who conducted the survey, said it was important to raise awareness of PSSs, amid growing use of natural foods.

It is well known that the concomitant use of drugs and certain dietary foods can affect the therapeutic effect and also cause health problems.

For example, herbs such as St. John’s wort, ginkgo biloba extract, and aojiru (vegetable juice made from green leafy vegetables) are said to have potential drug interactions.

Japan institutionalized HSPs in 2016 and as of June 2021 there were 2,608 in operation, representing 4% of the country’s 60,000 pharmacies.

This is the first report that clarifies the awareness and need for health support pharmacies. HSP is a system unique to Japan, but as the use of natural foods increases around the world, the concept of HSP is also important in other countries.“, published researchers in Nutrients.

Online survey

A national online survey was administered to 10,000 men and women aged 20-89 in 2020.

Respondents were asked about their knowledge and use of HSPs, the need for the services they provide, and their use of natural foods.

Survey results

Respondents were asked if there was an HSP in their place of residence and 92% answered that there was none or that they did not know if there was. The others said there was an HSP within walking, biking or driving distance.

About 44% of respondents said they had not used a PSS, but would like to use them in the future. Positive sentiment was skewed more towards older respondents.

The most frequent responses regarding future use of PSS were about prescribing medication (51%), advising on prescription medication (52%), and explaining over-the-counter medication (48%). The desire for consultations regarding dietary/nutritional advice and healthy foods was recorded between 30 and 40%.

In terms of health food use, approximately 22% of respondents currently used vitamin/mineral products, and 20% used other products that included herbs and pre/probiotics.

The future of HSP

To improve healthy life expectancy, it is important to increase both knowledge of HSPs and their number to help consumers easily find and access HSPs, as over 90% of participants responded that there was no FSS in their area of residence or that they did not have one. know if there wassaid the researchers.
