Raymond G. Yorks, Sr. – The leader of Gloversville Herald

Gloversville – Raymond George Yorks, Sr. passed away suddenly and quietly on Saturday, April 2, 2022. Ray (aka Algie), was born in Mayfield of Algy and Iona (Dutcher) Yorks. He had four brothers; Bob, Paul (December), Dale and Albert. After his time in the Air Force, he was married to Elsie Walton for 53 years, until her death in 2015.
In his younger years, among other jobs, he was a respected bus driver for the Mayfield School District with many stories to tell. He lived in Mayfield for much of his life and was a volunteer firefighter, including Asst. Fire chief and fire chief for a while. He enjoyed country and bluegrass music (especially Mac Wiseman), calling square dances, coffeehouses where all the good gossip was, riding motorcycles and playing cards with friends.
His youngest son, James (Snuffy) died in 1988. He is survived by his son Ray Jr. and his wife Chrissy, his daughters Deb and Laurie, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and his partner Ellen Johnson. Although he has moved over the past two decades, he has always called Mayfield his home and will be remembered and missed by many.
There will be a celebration of life at the Mayfield Servicemen’s Club on Saturday, April 9 at noon. All who wish to attend are welcome. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Northville Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.northvillefuneralservice.com.
