Opening date confirmed for new Birmingham gymnasium on former Blockbusters site

A brand new gymnasium is set to open on the site of a famous video rental store in Sutton Coldfield after a four month delay. Built Unique Co will welcome customers next month after the former Blockbusters was transformed into a fitness site following a £250,000 investment.

The gymnasium was originally due to open ‘in early December’ but suffered a setback after the project’s building contractor went bankrupt last year ‘without warning’. This caused ‘significant delays’ until a new contractor was found, but the site is now back on track.

The grand opening is set to take place on Saturday, April 23, just after Easter. Built Unique Co is described as an “inclusive gym, offering fitness facilities and classes for all levels of experience, including guests with different abilities.”

Bosses said the focus is on ‘simplicity’, with small group classes, sustainable nutrition plans and one-on-one coaching focusing on ‘individual goals and building confidence’. The gym’s owner said it would be different from other gyms in the area which focus on “functional fitness” – movement that mirrors everyday movement “engaging multiple muscle groups”.

At the same time, he announced that he would offer sessions led by a physical trainer (PT), classes, nutritional advice and strength training. Rather than just attracting “gym bunnies”, Built Unique Co said it wants to attract new gym goers from “schools, clubs and families”.

The grand opening will offer attendees the opportunity to sample what is on offer. They will be able to tour the new facilities, participate in free open gym sessions, sweat-free one-on-one consultations, live demonstrations from fitness professionals, and sample a variety of nutritious foods and beverages.

Gary Smith, who previously worked at CrossFit B76 at Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club, is the new managing director of Built Unique Co at Birmingham Road in the city

Owner Gary Smith said he invites local businesses to take a tour of the site to see what it can offer them. Mr Smith, who has 15 years of experience in the fitness industry, said: “At Built Unique Co, Co is about community rather than business.

“We couldn’t be more excited to embody this concept by having a big impact on the local community and opening up to the heart of the vibrant and future neighborhood of Sutton Coldfield. There couldn’t be a better place to test our concept of “high street gym”. .

“We are committed to energizing the Sutton market and bringing traffic back to downtown. Our goal is to become a fixture in the community with Sutton Coldfield locals and fitness fanatics everywhere joining the gym to get the most out of our high caliber staff and innovative personalized programs.

“We are also looking to partner with local suppliers and businesses to create a real hub of mutual benefit that is exciting for our members and provides opportunities for people in the area to come together.”
