Fort Bend County Libraries pay homage to the fabulous 1940s with a quartet of barbers, vintage cars, swing dance music and radio theater

Fort Bend County Libraries is commemorating its 75th anniversary with a Diamond Jubilee from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond.

Visitors can stroll among vintage cars that will be on display in the parking lot and imagine what life was like when the founders of the library system dreamed of making books available to everyone in Fort Bend County.

Grandma’s Boyfriends, a quartet of barbers singing popular tunes reminiscent of post-World War II, and Second Street Brass will provide entertainment. A professional dance company will be on hand for swing dancing lessons and some of their dancers will “wow” the audience with their own moves.

Actors from a local community theater will recreate a radio theater show with an interactive performance in the meeting room. Gather around the radio to hear the twists and turns of this week’s mysterious story.

Children can stop by the Youth Department Puppet Theater to hear “75 Books for 75 Years” – a story hour continues throughout the event – when young librarians read beloved stories through the decades. Their parents and grandparents can even hear old tales from their childhood.

The Fort Bend History Association will be present near the amphitheater, with popular games from the 1940s. Players of all ages can also participate in a live action game of Clue, with real actors and hidden clues throughout. the library.

An official welcoming ceremony will kick off the event at 11 a.m. in the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater.

Katy AARP chapter meeting scheduled for October 11

The Katy Chapter of AARP will meet at 6:30 p.m. on October 11 at the Fussell Senior Center, 5370 E 5th St.

After a short meeting and announcements, Don Plemmons and Prairie Fire will play bluegrass music. Visitors are welcome.

Katy Lions accepting entries for Peace Poster Contest

The Katy Lions are inviting students ages 11-13 to submit entries for the club’s Peace Poster Contest. The deadline for submission is October 14.

AMERIGROUP presents gift to Katy Christian Ministries

Health insurance company and managed health care provider AMERIGROUP will present Katy Christian Ministries with funding for an irrigation system for KCM’s community garden.

The presentation will take place at 9 a.m. on October 19 at KCM’s head office, 3506 Porter Road.

Produce harvested from the garden is provided to families to fight food insecurity, break the cycle of poverty by providing educational gardening sessions to children and teens, and provide a therapeutic outlet for victims of domestic violence and abuse. sexual abuse.

This irrigation system will alleviate the manual work currently done by volunteers as they have to become resourceful in watering the garden, using heavy buckets and other means.

Cross Creek Ranch Hosts Art Market and Home Tour

Cross Creek Ranch is holding an art market and home visitation from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 22 at its visitor center, 6450 Cross Creek Bend Lane in Fulshear.

National Medication Take-Back Day is set for October 29.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced its annual National Medication Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 29.

The public can drop off potentially dangerous prescription drugs at collection sites that will follow local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations to maintain the safety of all attendees and local law enforcement.

In Fulshear, the drop-off point was moved to Fulshear Police Department Headquarters at 6639 West Cross Creek Bend.
