Telangana BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar has called for a boycott of comedian Munawar Faruqui’s show scheduled for today in Hyderabad. On Friday night, BJP MLA T Raja Singh and others were remanded in custody and later released following Raja Singh’s earlier threat to burn down the venue of Munawar Faruqui’s performance.
Taking a dig at the ruling TRS, BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar tweeted: “As if the comedy circus of the TRS government run by a group of clowns in Telangana wasn’t enough, now they are bringing in Munawar Faruqui.” Questioning the message sent to Hindus by authorizing this program, Sanjay Kumar said that Munawar belittles “Goddess Seetamma and Lord Rama in the name of comedy”. “Boycott the show that makes fun of Hindu gods,” he said.
Munawar Faruqui was criticized for his jokes which even landed him in jail in 2021. Since then, several of his shows have been canceled in many states over public order issues. In January 2021, the comedian was arrested in Indore where he performed in a cafe. In February, he was released on bail by the Supreme Court.
Bengaluru Police have canceled Munawar’s show in the city which was to be held on Friday following a complaint by a Hindutva organization called Jai Sri Ram Sena Sanghatan which alleged that his show ‘Dongri to Nowhere’ would harm religious feelings of Hindus. However, Faruqui said the show was canceled due to her health issues.
Hyderabad venue yet to be announced, Faruqui says health issues
Despite reports that Bengaluru police refused permission for Faruqui’s show, the comedian claimed on Friday that the Bengaluru show was postponed until next week as he missed his flight due to health issues. . He also said he was undergoing Covid tests. This raises questions about his show in Hyderabad as well as the venue for the show was not announced until late Friday.
