Mom gave Madison Police a false name for her son, but not the one he used

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A suspect and his mother apparently did not have their stories clear when police in Madison wanted to know his name. According to the police, he gave the officers one answer, then his mother gave them another – and neither of them was right.

The Madison Police Department’s initial report on the encounter indicates that the suspect, Travon Kelly, was wearing a black hood and was sitting in the passenger seat Thursday afternoon when officers stopped a vehicle in the 2400 block of Rimrock Road. A K-9 unit reportedly detected something suspicious, leading investigators to ask Kelly and the driver, whose name has not been released, to get out of the vehicle.

Before the agents could carry out a search, Kelly would have animated and would have got up from the sidewalk. The police report said he resisted officers’ orders and was eventually handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car. When investigators finally conducted their search, the report says they found a loaded handgun, ammunition and a black hood.

MPD reports that officers also found an ID card that showed Kelly initially gave them a false name. At one point during the traffic stop, Kelly’s mother, Keshaunta Kelly, arrived at the scene and identified her son with a false name different from the one he used, the MPD report continued. Kelly, 39, was cited for obstructing justice and released.

Her 23-year-old son was taken to Dane Co. prison and incarcerated for carrying concealed weapons, obstruction and resistance, along with a pair of warrants from Monona for alleged burglary and theft.
