According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the number of babies with the same names as two characters in the hit Netflix series Sex Education has increased.
The names Maeve and Otis, who are shared by comedy-drama’s Otis Milburn and Maeve Wiley, have both climbed the rankings for the most popular names given to children born in 2020.
Otis was among the âBiggest Moversâ in the Top 100 Boy Names list, dropping from 28 places to 96th place, the ONS said.
Maeve has gained 124 places since 2019 to reach 94th place in the standings.
Sex Education tells the story of Otis, played by Asa Butterfield and his sex therapist mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson), as he makes his way through high school.
Her close friend Maeve is played by actress Emma Mackey.
The third round of the program, which started in 2019, was released in the UK in September.
Sian Bradford, Vital Statistics Branch at ONS, said: âPopular culture continues to be an inspiration for baby names, whether they are characters in our favorite or fashionable celebrity show.
âMaeve and Otis, characters from the popular Sex Education program, saw a surge in popularity in 2020.â
She added that Margot’s name has been âclimbing fastâ in the charts since Australian actress Margot Robbie starred in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.
The given name Olivia, shared by actress Olivia Colman, has remained the most popular female given name for five consecutive years.
