More drinks now earn stars

PORTLAND, Maine, March 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Guiding stars nutritional orientation program announced an interesting improvement in its algorithm, the formula it uses to assign stars to food and drink. Calorie-free drink options, like water and seltzer, are now eligible to earn stars, allowing customers to make better choices when shopping. Water, seltzer, unsweetened teas, unsweetened coffee, coconut water, kombucha, and 100% pure juices are examples of new star-winning beverages.

“For more than 15 years, Guiding Stars has helped shoppers make nutritious choices, guided manufacturers to improve their recipes, and enabled food retailers to meet their customers’ desire for options that promote good health,” said Julie. Greene, director of Guiding Stars. . “With the launch of this new algorithm, we are now able to provide more advice to buyers.”

Guiding Stars’ simple nutrition advice icons help consumers save time and gain confidence in their choices when shopping for nutritious products in-store and online: one star for good, two stars for best, and three stars for best nutritional value. Guiding Stars icons appear in over 2,000 grocery stores. By leveraging Guiding Stars, retailers can report sales of products that meet an objective, science-based standard for nutritional value.

To evaluate the products, Guiding Stars relies on the expertise of a Scientific Advisory Committee monitor the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and recommendations from national and international health organizations to adjust the algorithms. The group recommended improving the beverage algorithm based on a thorough review of the scientific evidence on the importance of beverage choices for health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

“Given that sugary drinks are the largest contributor of added sugars to the American diet, we sought to evolve our guidance to identify beverages that hydrate, without increasing the risk of chronic disease,” said Leslie Fischer, PhD, MPH, RD, Guiding Stars Scientific Advisory Board Member. “The new Guiding Stars approach to beverage ratings allows low-calorie and no-calorie options, such as water and flavored sodas, to be eligible for stars.”

“Using a positive approach, Guiding Stars makes nutritious choices easier,” Greene added. “We will continue to monitor the latest scientific evidence, policies and regulations to evolve our Nutrition Guidance program to meet the changing needs of retailers and their customers and do our part to promote health in the communities we touch.”
