Declare Thamirabarani name as Porunai River

An activist has filed a petition in Madurai Bench of Madras High Court asking the state to declare the name of Thamirabarani River as Porunai River. The name is mentioned in Sangam literature, he said.

Petitioner SMA Pon Gandhimathinathan of Pudukottai in Thoothukudi district said that Porunai is a perennial river which originates from Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai Hills in Western Ghats.

It flowed through Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts and into the Gulf of Mannar. On the banks of the river existed the Porunai civilization, which was home to many Tamil grammarians like Tholkappiar, Kakkai Padiniyar and Vamanar, he said.

Ancient literature and historical data have highlighted the fact that the Porunai River had held a very important place in Tamil civilization. “Porunai is the symbol of Tamil culture and civilization. Porunai is a pure Tamil name and Thamirabarani is a Sanskrit name,” he said.

Researchers said there were countless inscriptions across the state, where the river’s name was mentioned as “Than Poruntham” and then “Than Porunai” evolved into Thamira Porunai and Thamirabarani, it said. -he declares.

He said the state government had set up a committee to change the place names to their pure Tamil names. Steps should also be taken to declare the name of Thamirabarani River as Porunai River as the request was right.

The petitioner stated that he had approached the state government. As the representation was not considered, he filed the petition in court, he said.

A divisional bench of Justices R. Mahadevan and J. Sathya Narayana Prasad requested a response from the state government in this case. The court adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
